M42, the Orion Nebula

This image used a Hydrogen-Alpha filter for creating the luminance component. The consequences are greater contrast in the clouds of ionized hydrogen gas and much weaker images of individual stars. The relative exposures for the luminance were 2 minutes and 28 minutes respectively. Both images were made using the Skywatcher 100mm refractor telescope that is mounted piggy-back fashion on the LX200R telescope. The Starlight Xpress SXV H16 CCD camera was used for the imaging and a Lodestar guide camera on the LX200 for guiding - the reverse of the normal situation but used when the object has large angular size
